“Mother Tongue”

While reading mothers tongue,I thought the book would cover how English is a complex and complicated language for the author while reading the first half of the book. As the author began to explain how there are many different versions of speaking English, whether it’s basic English or more of a complex engish with proper formal grammatical words, and how she experiences speaking in the different forms of engish. However, while reading the lower half of the book, I started to realize that this essay is more of her opinions of how other people, like her mother, speaks English, duh rather than speaking main,y for herself. The author dives into her life story by sharing past memories of hearing how her mother used English in what other people might call “broke” or “simple”. There’s more to it than that however, according to the author. Although other people may hear broken English from some people, hearing the mother speak eng,is his as clear as day for the author to understand and translate without hesitation or second thought. So what the author is trying to say is that English is not an easy thing to comprehend and be taught with ease, and when people struggle to speak English to people who can understand English perfectly, it can give a negative image and create judgement. Although people may judge those who do not speak good English, it can affect ones self growth and can affect people’s self worth. The main message of this story is that if you hear someone speak a different form of English than you, then it’s better not to ridicule them for it.

“ The Voice Of A Storyteller”

What I found most important in “The Voice of the Storyteller” by Constance Hale was his breakdown of every single aspect of his topic that he discuessed in his essay, with explaining his meaning behind every term, using an example and providing real world samples of each aspect. What showed the exigence of thus reading was Hale’s elaboration of bow having a good voice while being the narrator and storyteller offers you a bigger and greater connection with the audience and reader. I agree with every bit of information Hale provides in his essay because I understood his main message in his essay and felt it could be relatable to any person about anything they read or write, as long as the story gives satisfaction the reader and dtoryteller. I have my story teller, who would be my own family, particularly my older brother, who shares his own tales and experiences of his life in his own voice of storytelling, and I would like to consider myself a storyteller, as I always reflect on my own thoughts like as if I was in some sort of show where I am the main character and I am describing my younger days like I was a 50 year old narrator

“Only Daughter”

While reading her essay, there were a couple things I enjoyed that I’d like to point out. First, her essay is mainly revolved around her work and her relationship with her father. Her chosen words such as “7 sons” and ” pone daughter and 6 sons” reflect on  her relationship with her father. Second, her fathers relationship with the author is what paved the road to choose her path in her writing, as her father had a narrow mindset of having her daughter find a husband, while she wanted to have a good education and impress her father. This sets the purpose for her essays and books she consistently writes to gain her fathers impression. Her main goal is to nit only show her father her work, but to show it off and run it in his face to how competent she really is. What made this special to me was that I can relate to her essay on the context of being the only one who is different in a Mexican immigrant family. I understood her struggle in going to college and having a good image of being the one who can succeed in life and it adds pressure. I understood her message of explaining how life as the only daughter in her Mexican immigrant family in Chicago really does make her stand out, especially when being compared to her 6 brothers.
